The pain and beauty behind the brush, Colourful Story
This project is meant to bring Appreciation.
Appreciation for Japanese Zen Calligraphy.
The colourful story starts with the colour white (Shiro) This is considered a sacred colour of the Gods (Kami), which symbolize physical and spiritual purity.
The project is also meant to intrigue.
From the process of creating prototypes of kanji and meditative states of mind to the postures to take while performing the art of Zen Calligraphy.
What this project aims to achieve is to bring appreciation and interest to the topic
Zen Japanese Calligraphy, the theme that follows along this idea is white and its sacred connection to the Gods.
The significance of white- Sacred Connection to the gods
The experience is closely followed and gives a first-person perception, to give the viewer the feeling as if they are going through the experiences themselves.
The documented experience promotes the idea of a beautiful but painful process, by following the traditional ritual of grinding inkstick onto the inkstone, leaving yourself in a quiet environment with a meditative state you build up.
This experience also allows one to build character, as learning when to take and give, to the ink, is what gives you your piece of art or expression in the end.
From the creation of the final, the process, traditional ink grinding, and painting the Japanese kanji, the meditative feelings and state of mind is what leaves us with the final.
The font I have chosen to better emphasize my final is Aktiv Grotesk , With the colour black.
I made use of the negative spacing and caption text to create three beautifully displayed hanging scrolls.
What differentiates my work from others is that I have created the space for myself in my home to bring Japanese tradition to my own living room. Therefore showing my experience can also be tested by others with the items I used in the comfort of their home.
Why?
I have been immersed in the language study of Japanese for two years and have found the process beautiful in painting the characters.
I have always had an admiration for Japanese writing and meditation, thus why I have gone deeper by learning about Zen Calligraphy through YouTube and online articles.
